How SSA Calculates the COLA

The COLA isn't a political decision — it's a formula. SSA compares the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) for July, August, and September of each year against the same period of the prior year. If the average rises, benefits rise by the same percentage in January.

The 2026 COLA of 2.5% reflects CPI-W data from Q3 2025 vs. Q3 2024. SSA announces the following year's COLA every October. It's applied automatically — you don't need to apply or request the increase.

CPI-W vs. what seniors actually spend. The CPI-W tracks spending patterns of working-age adults — not retirees. Seniors spend more of their income on healthcare and housing, which typically inflate faster than the CPI-W captures. Critics argue a senior-specific index (CPI-E) would produce higher COLAs more of the time.

Will the COLA Be Offset by Medicare?

Yes — partly. In 2026, the standard Medicare Part B premium is $185/month, up from $174.70 in 2025. The Social Security "hold harmless" rule protects most beneficiaries from having their net SS check reduced by Part B increases, but the premium hike does eat into the COLA gain.

Net impact example — average beneficiary: 2026 COLA adds +$49/month. Part B premium increase subtracts -$10.30/month. Net check increase: approximately +$38.70/month for most beneficiaries.
