Medicare Savings Programs Explained

Full MSP guide

There are four Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). Each one covers a different slice of your Medicare costs based on your income. About 5 million eligible beneficiaries don't enroll — mostly because they don't know they qualify.

QMB

Qualified Medicare Beneficiary

Covers Part A & B premiums, deductibles, and cost-sharing. The most comprehensive program.

SLMB

Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary

Pays your Part B premium only — saves you $185/month in 2026.

QI

Qualifying Individual

Also pays Part B premium. Income limits are slightly higher than SLMB.

QDWI

Qualified Disabled & Working Individuals

Pays Part A premium for people under 65 who lost disability benefits due to returning to work.

2026 MSP Income Limits

These are federal guidelines. Some states have higher limits or additional programs.

Program Individual Income Limit Couple Income Limit What It Covers
QMB ≤ $1,255/mo ≤ $1,704/mo Premiums + deductibles + cost-sharing
SLMB ≤ $1,502/mo ≤ $2,040/mo Part B premium only
QI ≤ $1,690/mo ≤ $2,292/mo Part B premium only
QDWI ≤ $4,945/mo ≤ $6,672/mo Part A premium only

Income limits are approximate. Asset limits may apply. Use our estimator for a personalized assessment.
